Ukraine unveils new AREION missile-drone 17/04/2026 | Francesco Bossi

On the occasion of the Defence Industry Workers' Day, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha presented a new exhibition dedicated to weapons systems, including missiles, drones, and state-of-the-art electronic warfare systems.

Among the systems on display were the OCTOPUS and STING interceptor drones, as well as several UAVs including the BUNTAR-3, GOR, SICHEN, and SOVA-150.

Among the most noteworthy solutions on show was the new "hybrid" weapon system designated AREION. Based on the PALYANYTSIA project, first unveiled in 2024, it is configured as a "missile-drone," capable of combining the typical characteristics of a small cruise missile with those of an unmanned system. The system features a cylindrical configuration, with fixed wings positioned in the forward section and control surfaces located at the rear. This aerodynamic solution is designed to ensure greater stability along the flight trajectory while simultaneously optimising the overall range of the vehicle. Based on the limited technical information available, and drawing on the characteristics of its predecessor system, it is plausible that the AREION employs an integrated guidance system based on GPS and inertial navigation.

Launch would be achieved via a solid-fuel rocket booster, which is jettisoned after the initial phase of flight, with propulsion then provided by a turbojet engine. In terms of performance, the operational range is estimated at around 600 km, while the warhead is reportedly capable of carrying an explosive payload of up to approximately 120 kg.

These characteristics make the system particularly well-suited to striking high-value targets in depth. The AREION can be launched both from NEPTUNE system launchers and from launchers installed on mobile platforms such as trailers and semi-trailers.
