Greece approves acquisition of 2 Italian FREMM frigates 22/05/2026 | TOMMASO MASSA

According to Greek media reports, the Government Council for National Security (KYSEA), which convened on 18 May, has approved the acquisition of 2 second-hand FREMM-class frigates from the Italian Navy — namely the BERGAMINI (FREMM GP) and the FASAN (FREMM ASW), which will be replaced within the Italian Navy by the same number of FREMM EVO units.

The preliminary agreement between the two National Armaments Directorates was signed last September at the SEAFUTURE 2025 exhibition in La Spezia. The framework remains the "2+2" formula, with an option for 2 additional units.

The KYSEA decision clears the way for the contractual phase proper, which may take one of two forms: a government-to-government (G2G) agreement between Rome and Athens, or a direct commercial contract between Fincantieri and the Greek Ministry of Defence, along the lines of what has already been done with Indonesia for the 2 former Italian Navy PPAs.

At the same session, the KYSEA also approved the modernisation programme for the 4 HYDRA-class frigates (MEKO 200HN) of the Hellenic Navy.
