Rheinmetall Naval Systems unveiled GMF 140, a new 140 meters, 6,000 tons AAW warship design 14/08/2026 | Gabriele Molinelli

Rheinmetall has unveiled its GMF 140 proposal for a next-generation 140-metre, 6,000+ tonne guided missile frigate, a highly multipurpose warship specializing first of all in in integrated air and missile defence and ballistic missile defence.

According to the company, the design is meant to meet the “evolving operational requirements” of NATO and allies Navies. It specifically adds that it intends to initially offer it as part of a “procurement project in North America”. It’s not clear at this stage what programme Rheinmetall intends to pursue. Canada is not known to have a requirement for which GMF 140 appears suited: the Multi-mission Corvette project as described calls for ships considerably cheaper and less armed than a GMF 140. The multi-mission corvette was described by Canadian Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee in 2025 as a ship capable of self-defence, equipped with sonar and with an ice-edge, “roughly Polar 6 class” capability.

Pursuing opportunities on the frigate front in the United States would also be very complex and at present there is not an obvious opening that the german design might pursue.

The GMF 140 appears particularly well attuned to the (very vague at present) description of the Common Combat Vessel planned for the Royal Navy, which is supposed to be primarily orientated towards the IAMD mission while being “smaller than an existing Type 45”.

At 6,000 tons and 140 meters but with a powerful battery of missiles and sensors, GMF 140 would “meet” that definition. The CCV is however very likely to be based on the Type 31 hull base and built as a “tail” to the current Type 31 program delivered by Babcock in Rosyth.

GMF 140 would also offer a “parachute” to Germany itself where some voices have been growing increasingly critical of the size and cost of the planned F-127 IAMD vessels, which are now projected to displace some 12,000 tons.

The GMF 140 is designed specifically “to integrate US sourced primary radar options” and the AEGIS combat system. In particular the first radar considered would be the AN/SPY-6, already selected also for the F-127, but with the SPY-7 also a possibility.

The AEGIS combat system can readily be “augmented” with the Lockheed Martin Canada CMS330 Combat Management System where necessary, confirming that Rheinmetall is targeting potential interest by the Royal Canadian Navy which already uses this system and plans for it to be used on the RIVER-class destroyers (BAE Systems Type 26 base hull).

The GMF 140 is designed in any case as a “true multi-domain combatant”, incorporating advanced anti-submarine warfare capabilities, a low-signature hull, integrated acoustic management, hull mounted and towed sonar systems. The design includes 64 MK41 cells for AAW and BMD missiles and potentially also for long range strike.

The images released by Rheinmetall show a very heavy armament, with the MK41 modules split in two separate silos, half on the bow and half amidship. 2 SEA RAM CIWS mounts are included, with a MK45 127mm main gun. A battery of 8 Naval Strike Missiles is shown atop the helicopter hangar, where space is also available for a pair of containers with potential mission modules.

The CGI images also show 4 Marine-Leichtgeschütz 27 mounts with Mauser BK-27 guns for close range defence. 2 triple tubes for lightweight ASW torpedoes are also included, curiously in the above-deck, exposed, trainable configuration.

The fixed faces of the main radar are split in pairs on the main mast and on a second large mast astern. The ship is shown equipped with what look like AN/SLQ-32 EW installations. The hull is characterized by a prominent wave-piercing inverted bow with a large done for hull-mounted sonar.
