Patria and KNDS sign deal for the production in Germany of the Patria 6x6 Common Armoured Vehicles (CAVS) 20/08/2026 | Gabriele Molinelli

On August 11, Patria and KNDS Deutschland Maintenance (KNDS) have signed a framework agreement covering the assembly and final integration of Patria XA-300 6x6 Armoured Personnel Carriers in Germany within the wider context of the multinational Common Armoured Vehicles (CAVS) programme.

The partnership is being established as part of 2 procurement contracts for the Patria 6x6 vehicle awared to Patria by the German Armed Forces in December 2025. Those deals, according to the Bundeswehr, include 349 firm orders already in place for the vehicle, to be delivered in 4 variants. The order could grow to 876 units, with possible orders for many more to follow. Patria has already delivered the first 5 vehicles for testing, within 2 months of contract signature.

The partnership with KNDS and other German industrial partners is fundamental to deliver the “gradual increase” of local production in Germany under the procurement plan. Serial deliveries to the Bundeswehr will ramp up already in early 2027. According to Patria’s communiqué from December 2025, within 2027 there will also be the first deliveries of “fully locally built” vehicles.

Other German industry partners already identified are FFG and JWT: agreements were signed in 2024, following Germany’s entry in CAVS during 2023.

The CAVS programme has been growing rapidly in the last few years. At launch in 2020 it was a bi-national initiative between Finland and Latvia, but CAVS has since expanded to include Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Norway and the UK. Deliveries are already underway in Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Denmark and Germany, with a number of vehicles also in use in Ukraine, granted in kind by donor nations.

Under the agreement, KNDS will handle vehicle assembly and final integration as part of a broader effort to establish a german production network which will enjoy a growing share of the production over time.

The Patria 6x6 is a light APC, weighing 15.3 tons empty and with a basic STANAG 4569 Level 2 protection level. It is fully amphibious, and depending on configuration it can accommodate 8 to 10 dismounts and 2-3 crew members.

Among the variants Germany is acquiring there is a mortar carrier fitted with the Patria NEMO 120 mm turreted weapon. The UK is also believed to have plans for this variant. The UK is also considering a CBRN variant as future replacement for the FUCHS. The german APC variant will be equipped with a Kongsberg RS4 remote weapon station.

The first UK variant to appear should however be a Ground Based Air Defence SHORAD Fire Unit, in development as replacement for the current, tracked STORMER HVM.

The first few UK orders are supposedly funded by part of 500 million over 4 years allocated within the Defence Investment Plan. Updates on the status of the programme ( Land Mobility Program – Heavy Protected segment) could come in September at DVD 2026 at the Millbrook proving ground.
