The Indian Army will procure the JAVELIN Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) in its first purchase of the US weapons.
The US Embassy in India announced on 28 August, that the Indian Army had signed the Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) for the purchase of the JAVELIN ATGM system through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales process.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said the JAVELIN agreement demonstrated the depth of U.S. support for the Indian Army. “We see tremendous potential for future cooperation that strengthens the defence industrial bases of both countries.” The agreement follows US approval in November 2025 for a potential JAVELIN ATGM sale valued at approximately US$45.7 million.
The approved package comprised 100 FGM-148 JAVELIN rounds; one fly-to-buy JAVELIN missile and 25 JAVELIN Lightweight Command Launch Units (LwCLU) or JAVELIN Block 1 Command Launch Units (CLU) together with training, support equipment, spares and other programme support.
India and the United States are also pursuing co-production of JAVELIN missiles in India. New Delhi is also pursuing wider US-India defence-industrial cooperation, including discussions around the potential licensed manufacture of STRYKER Infantry Combat Vehicles (IFVs) in India.
The JAVELIN is a medium-range, man-portable, fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile system designed to engage armoured vehicles and fortified positions. It can employ both top-attack and direct-attack modes and uses an imaging infrared seeker. It is produced by the JAVELIN Joint Venture, a partnership between RTX and Lockheed Martin.
