US Army awards $13M contract to Global Military Products for SCORPION Light Mobile Mortar 16/09/2026 | Gabriele Molinelli

The US Army has awarded Global Military Products a $12.9 million contract for the procurement and integration of its SCORPION Light Mobile Mortar Systems under the Department of Defense Ordnance Technology Consortium (DOTC) Other Transaction Authority (OTA) framework.

This award supports the integration of SCORPION LIGHT, an 81mm mobile mortar system, with US Army existing digital fire control technologies and government-furnished M253 mortar barrels. The complete system will be integrated onto the Army’s Infantry Squad Vehicle–Utility (ISV-U) platforms.

The US Army is planning to procure over 11,000 ISVs, having decided to convert all of its Infantry and Air Assault Brigade Combat Teams into “Mobile” BCTs which use these lightweight squad mobility vehicles to dramatically expand their ability to cover ground.

Global Military Products will deliver this contract working alongside NTGS, Original Equipment Manufacturer behind the SCORPION system; and GM Defense which makes the ISV-U platforms. GM Defense’s ISV-U is a militarized, unprotected Chevrolet COLORADO ZR2 with five seats and a rear cargo bed which, in this case, is used to accommodate the SCORPION LIGHT system and the ammunition.

The USMC also procured a SCORPION LIGHT solution with an order announced in March. In their case, the vehicle base chosen is even more compact, the Polaris MRZR Alpha 6x6. Global Military Products has worked alongside US Army and USMC for the last 2 years to continuously evaluate, iterate and refine the SCORPION platform according to what observed in the field in exercises and experiments.

Recently, soldiers from the Multi-Purpose Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, fired 20 rounds from 2 separate ISV-based SCORPION during Exercise BALIKATAN 2026 in the Philippines. The fire mission took under 2 minutes.

The ISV-U can carry at least 42 rounds ready to fire; up to 72 according to other sources. In most images it can be observed with tracks of 21 rounds on each side. The SCORPION system is derived from the internationally marketed ALAKRAN architecture by NTGS: this features a hinged, ground-contacting baseplate that transfers firing shock straight into the dirt rather than through the vehicle chassis. The mortar is lowered to the ground at the rear of the vehicle for the firing missions.

The latest evolution of the system integrates advanced digital fire control capabilities and the NETT WARRIOR (NW) networked communications architecture, enabling rapid target acquisition, precision fire missions and near instantaneous re-aiming with minimal crew intervention.

The ISV-U vehicles can be carried interally in CH-47 CHINOOKs. The CH-47 can also carry 2 ISVs under-slung externally. A single ISV can be carried under slung by UH-60 BLACK HAWK helicopters as well. They are lightweight, unprotected vehicles meant to increase the mobility of the infantry.
