Republic of Singapore Navy Decommissions CHALLENGER Class Submarines 29/11/2024 | Mike Rajkumar

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) decommissioned its last two CHALLENGER-class submarines on 25 November. The RSS CONQUEROR and RSS CHIEFTAIN were formally decommissioned from service in a ceremony at RSS Singapura – Changi Naval Base.

“The CHALLENGER-class submarines, together with RSN’s pioneer submariners who were also trained in Sweden, played an invaluable role in our journey towards developing a submarine operating capability,” a Singapore MINDEF spokesperson said.

The tasks and missions undertaken by the CHALLENGER-class submarines will be taken over by the RSN’s new INVINCIBLE-class Submarines, the first 2 of which, the RSS INVINCIBLE and RSS IMPECCABLE were commissioned into service in September, this year.

The ex-Royal Swedish Navy’s SJOORMEN-class submarines had entered service in the early 1990s, following which they were later acquired by Singapore to create a submarine force. The RSS CONQUEROR and RSS CHIEFTAIN were commissioned into service on 22 July 2000 and 24 August 2002 respectively.

The RSS INVINCIBLE and RSS IMPECCABLE are now fully operational undertaking a wide spectrum of operations to protect Singapore’s sea lines of communication. The INVINCIBLE-class submarines were ordered from Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and designed to operate in Singapore’s shallow and busy tropical waters, feature high levels of automation have enhanced underwater endurance.

The remaining two submarines on order, ILLUSTRIOUS and INIMITABLE, are slated for delivery in 2028.
