The recently concluded International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) held in Karachi, Pakistan, revealed the existence of what appears to be a substantial modernisation of Pakistan’s JF-17 fighter, called as the JF-17 PFX (Pakistan Fighter Experimental).
Displayed as a scale model, development of the JF-17 PFX is expected to conclude by the end of the decade and will feature upgraded avionics, radars, new weapons and longer range Air-to-Air Missiles (AAM). The JF-17 light fighter programme is a joint development with Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Kamra and Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation of China.
The latest version of the JF-17 in production is the Block III, which was also the first major upgrade for the light fighter since it entered service. The JF-17 Block III is in service with the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and has also been exported to Azerbaijan, which inducted the type into service in September this year.
Azerbaijan is the fourth export customer for the JF-17. The JF-17 Block-III features an AESA Radar and Chinese origin BVRAAMs. It features a new and larger holographic wide-angle Head-Up Display and integrated cockpit display similar to the one used by the J-20, in addition to new Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS) similar to those fitted on J-10C, J-16 and J-20 fighter jets.
