The Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) will proceed with the upgrade of its Patrol Killer Guided Missile (PKGM) boats. Korea’s Defence Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) recently held the kick-off meeting for performance improvement project.
The PKG fleet will receive upgrades to their missile defence systems and their S&T Dynamics K6 12.7 mm machine guns will be replaced by a remote turret system. The performance of the ship’s STX RadarSys SPS-100K surface search radar and Electro-Optical (EO) systems (Saab CEROS 200 Fire Control Radar and optronic sight and Hanwha systems electro-optical targeting system) will also be improved.
As per a DAPA release, the upgrade effort will enhance the survivability and close-quarters combat capabilities of the ships, thereby improving their ability to perform missions in Korea’s territorial waters. Presently, the heavily armed 63 m long PKG boats are equipped with 4 140 km range LIG Nex-1 SSM-700K HAESEONG anti-ship missiles, a Hunday WIA 76/62 mm main gun, S&T Dynamics 'Nobong' 40L/70K 40 mm gun and 12.7 mm machine guns.
The YOON YOUNG-HA-class high-speed guided-missile patrol boats entered service in 2008 and are deployed on the Northern Limit Line (NLL) on Korea’s West Sea frontline.
