Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has received a Performance Based Logistics (PBL) contract from South Korea’s Defence Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) for the KF-21 4.5 generation fighter.
The PBL contract covers the first mass-produced aircraft contracted for last June. The deal worth Won124.3 billion (approximately US$700 million) is for a period of three years and concludes December 2027. According to KAI, the KF-21 PBL project is expected to be worth over 5 trillion won over the next 30 years.
KAI President Kang Koo-young said, “With this contract, the PBL line-up for all domestically produced aircraft developed by KAI has been established.” “We will mobilize all of KAI’s follow-up support capabilities to provide optimal support so that the KF-21, the next-generation core power of the ROK Air Force, can demonstrate its best performance,” he added. The KF-21 development programme commenced in 2015 and is scheduled to be completed by June 2026, with aircraft deliveries to begin the same year.
The KF-21 flight test programme has completed 1,000 accident-free sorties thus far. KAI received its first PBL contract, starting with the ROK Air Force’s KT/A-1 in 2010, and has continued to provide PBL support for T-50 series and SURION series aircraft. This year, it also entered into a PBL contract for the FA-50PH of the Philippines. This marks KAI’s first export PBL contract.
