South Korea’s Defence Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) has announced the completion of a modernisation effort that has replaced tactical air navigation equipment at its air bases with the latest domestically produced equipment.
The military navigation equipment is used to provide location and direction information to military aircraft. The project to install fixed-type tactical navigation equipment developed by Korea Airports Corporation at all Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) air bases began in 2019 and was completed earlier this year, when the tactical navigation equipment was deployed at Gangneung Air Base.
The project required an investment of Won 30.7 billion (approximately US$21 million) and is 100% domestically produced in Korea.
Senior Civil Servant Jeong Gyu-heon, Director of the Space Command and Communications Business Division at DAPA said, “We expect that the Air Force’s aerial operation capability and stability will be enhanced through the completion of the power-up of this domestically produced tactical navigation equipment.“ He added, that "the government will continue to provide necessary support and cooperation within the scope of its capabilities for the development of TACAN equipment and expansion of exports.”
DAPA also announced that Korea Airports Corporation, which developed the tactical navigation equipment, had achieved exports worth 21 billion won (USD14 million) to India in 2021. It also succeeded in developing a ship-mounted mobile TACAN in 2024. The tactical navigation equipment deployed by the ROKAF and the Indian Air Force (IAF) integrates the latest information and wireless communication technology, and is easier to maintain.
