Slovakia chooses Embraer's C-390 16/12/2024 | Tommaso Massa

On December 10, the Slovak Defence Minister, Robert Kalinák, during an official visit to Brazil, signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Brazilian Ministry of Defence to deepen industrial cooperation between the 2 countries.

In this context, the Slovak Defence Minister mentioned the C-390 as the best option to meet the country's tactical transport needs. The Minister also emphasised how the choice of the same aircraft by neighbouring countries (the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary, but also the less neighbouring Portugal and the Netherlands) lays the foundations for fruitful cooperation in terms of training and logistics.

According to a press release from Embraer, the aircraft manufacturer, Slovakia will acquire 3 C-390s, with the first formalities expected in January 2025.

As awareness grows about it, Embraer’s C-390 comes timely under the spotlight as an ideal solution for the replacement of legacy medium sized airlifters. Brazil is set to receive a total of 19 aircraft, while Portugal will receive 5. Additional orders were placed between 2020 and 2023: 2 for the Hungarian Air Force (2020), 5 for the Netherlands (2022), 4 for Austria (2023), 2 for the Czech Republic (2023), and an undisclosed number for the Republic of Korea Air Force (2023). In November 2024, Sweden has selected the KC-390 as well to replace its ageing C-130Hs.
