In a landmark agreement announced on February 25, 2025, Safran Electronics & Defense has solidified its partnership with the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) by supplying advanced Geonyx Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) for Finland’s artillery platforms. This long-term contract, spanning from 2024 to 2031, underscores Finland’s commitment to equipping its military with cutting-edge technology to enhance operational precision and mission readiness.
The Geonyx INS, a state-of-the-art system developed by Safran, leverages the company’s proprietary HRG Crystal technology. This innovation ensures precise navigation, targeting, and artillery pointing even in environments where Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are unavailable or disrupted. Its compact and shock-resistant design makes it ideal for integration into diverse military platforms, including vehicles, artillery systems such as mortars and self-propelled guns, and mobile radars. The system’s ability to deliver unparalleled accuracy in artillery pointing is expected to significantly bolster the Finnish Army’s capabilities in complex and dynamic operational environments.
In Finnish Defence Forces, the Geonyx INS will play a pivotal role in ensuring that Finland’s artillery systems remain operationally effective even in contested environments where traditional navigation systems may be compromised. This agreement is not the first collaboration between Safran and Finland. The two parties have previously partnered on projects aimed at modernizing Finland’s defence infrastructure. For instance, in 2021, Safran teamed up with Finnish forces on other inertial navigation systems projects, laying the groundwork for this latest contract.
With over 1,000 Geonyx units delivered worldwide, Safran Electronics & Defense has demonstrated its ability to provide reliable and resilient solutions tailored to the needs of modern armed forces. This latest agreement with Finland further cements Safran’s reputation for excellence in inertial navigation technologies.
