The Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) has taken delivery of its fourth TAIGEI-class submarine. The submarine RAIGEI was delivered earlier this week by Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) at its Kobe Shipyard Nishihama quay. The submarine is the fourth TAIGEI class submarine, and the 31st built at Kawasaki’s Kobe Shipyard after World War II.
Construction of the submarine began in March 2021, and it was launched in October 2023. As per KHI, the new submarine provides superior submerged operation due to the use of high strength steel for its pressure hull. The submarine is powered by two Kawasaki 12V 25/31 SB-type diesel engines. It also has an electric propulsion motor with lithium ion battery systems for increased underwater endurance. The submarine is heavily automated and features improved surveillance capabilities due to its high-performance sonar. It also has increased stealth capabilities. The new submarine is also equipped with several facilities for female crew members. The sonar system features improved detection capabilities as compared to the JMSDF’s SORYU class submarines. The submarine has a length of 84 m, beam of 9.1m and height of 10.4m. It has a displacement of 3,000 tonnes.
