The Indian state-owned defence firm Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) recently handed over the 49th SWATHI Weapon Locating Radar (WLR-Plains) to the Indian Army.
A company spokesperson said that the WLRs which had been indigenously developed by BEL and the DRDO lab LRDE, were delivered well ahead of the delivery schedule. The latest WLR to be delivered was the last of a 12-system order placed by the army in March 2023, worth Rupees 9.9 billion (€110 million).
The indigenously designed WLR is capable of locating guns, mortars and rockets firing on own troops. It facilitates counter bombardment of enemy batteries by own forces, enabling troops to carry out their operational tasks without any interference from the enemy and also provide them safety against enemy fire.
The WLR uses a passive phased array radar and detection, location and tracking of the requisite targets is handled by the advanced algorithms and state-of-the-art hardware.
A lighter version of the SWATHI (WLR-Mountains) was delivered to the Indian Army in August 2023.
