The Indian Air Force (IAF) will receive ASHWINI Low-level Transportable Radars (LLTR) as part of a contract inked by the Ministry of Defence with the state-owned firm Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The contract for the LLTRs is worth Rupees 29 billion (approximately US$246 million) and comprises 18 radars.
The ASHWINI LLTR was indigenously designed and developed by the Electronics & Radar Development Establishment, DRDO, with BEL designated as the production and support partner. The active electronically scanned phased array radar based on solid state technology and is capable of tracking aerial targets from high-speed fighter aircraft to slow moving targets such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and helicopters even under hostile EW operational environments.
The radar features 4D tracking capabilities (range, azimuth, elevation, and velocity) and integrates Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) systems, enabling precise surveillance in varied terrains. Its transportable design allows rapid deployment to critical border areas, enhancing the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) operational readiness along contested frontiers with China and Pakistan. This procurement marks the IAF’s first induction of domestically produced LLTRs, replacing imported systems and advancing India’s 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) goals in defence manufacturing.
