India continues with scramjet engine tests 30/04/2025 | Mike Rajkumar

India’s Ministry of Defence has announced a significant milestone in the nation’s quest for scramjet engine technology, which is crucial for the nation’s hypersonic weapons programme.

The Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) which falls under the auspices of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a long-duration Active Cooled Scramjet Subscale Combustor ground test, in which it ran for over 1,000 seconds.

The test took place at India’s newly built state-of-the-art Scramjet Connect Test Facility located in the Southern city of Hyderabad. ‘With the successful test, the system will be soon ready for a full scale flight worthy combustor testing,” an Indian MoD spokesperson said.

The latest ground-test was in continuation of an earlier test reported for 120 seconds in January this year. This test had overcome technological challenges such as successful ignition and stable combustion in a scramjet engine, in addition to proving using an indigenously developed endothermic scramjet fuel and testing a state-of-art domestically developed Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC).
