BAE Systems Hägglunds and Iveco Defence Vehicles sign MoU on BvS-10 for Italy 26/05/2025 | Eugenio Po

On 22 May 2025, BAE Systems Hägglunds and Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the BvS-10 articulated tracked vehicle to be offered to the Italian Army.

The agreement on the BvS-10, which is manufactured by Sweden's BAE Systems Hägglunds (part of the BAE Systems group), focuses on the design of Italian variants and their local production. This industrial cooperation, which builds on previous collaboration between IDV and BAE Systems (for the USMC's ACV programme), aims to offer the Italian Army a tracked snow vehicle customised to its requirements.

The Italian Army currently uses vehicles from the BV-206 family, also manufactured by BAE Systems Hägglunds, which will need to be replaced in the near future. Two vehicles are in the running to replace them: the BvS-10 offered by IDV and BAE, and the BRONCO 3 offered by ST Engineering together with Leonardo (prime contractor) and Aris.

However, the BvS-10 is undoubtedly the world's leading high-mobility articulated tracked vehicle, thanks to its remarkable performance in mountainous and difficult terrain (as well as its amphibious capabilities) and the Swedish company's considerable know-how in this category of vehicles.

Furthermore, thanks to its modular design, the BvS-10 can be reconfigured for different missions. The vehicle, which is available in many variants (transport, command post, ambulance, recovery, logistical support, weapon carrier and mortar carrier), is in service with Austria, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Ukraine (while the US Army and National Guard use an unarmoured variant); its adoption by the EI could therefore have significant benefits in terms of logistics and training with these countries.
