In the coming years, countless books will be written on this subject: the secret war waged by the Mossad against Iran in recent years—a war that culminated last night.
Yes, because last night the Mossad pulled off another one of its signature operations. Of course, no official details are available, but a series of leaks is already surfacing, allowing us to sketch an initial hypothesis.
A brief premise. The Mossad has established deep roots in Iran, evidenced by the dozens of assassinations, sabotage actions, etc., carried out over the years in the country’s heartland; not least the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last year. After all, the Israeli intelligence service on Iranian soil can rely on an army of dissidents and regime opponents, high-ranking officials who are easily corrupted, and so on. These assets provide a significant volume of what is known in the trade as “actionable intelligence,” as well as logistics, cover, escape routes—and thus freedom of maneuver—which explains what happened last night.
Mossad teams—and likely special forces units infiltrated long ago (from Iraqi Kurdistan or Azerbaijan)—moved into position just before the strikes were launched, then operated in perfect synchrony with them. Some teams probably deployed loitering munitions; others hacked into and took control of drones and missiles from who-knows-where; meanwhile, from austere sites, suicide drones were remotely activated.
In this way, radar installations and air-defense sites—as well as ground-to-ground missile batteries—were struck. Then, in a more traditional mode, operatives eliminated key regime figures… In short, we are witnessing one of the most magnificent intelligence operations in history. And it may be only the beginning.
