Hanwha Systems and Northrop Grumman have entered into an MOU for technology cooperation on Integrated Air Defense Systems (IADS). Both firms intend to create domestic and international business opportunities with this partnership.

“Hanwha Systems and Northrop Grumman plan to secure more powerful air defense system technology by combining the radar and integrated air defense command and control technologies each company possesses,” the Korean firm said in a release. Park Sung-kyun, head of Hanwha Systems’ Defence Electronics division, said “ Hanwha has recently been boldly changing and taking on new challenges in the development of future-oriented weapon systems in order to leap forward as a global company.”

Northrop Grumman’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence Battle Command System (IBCS), integrates various sensors and weapons to respond to air and missile threats and is currently being deployed in the US and Europe. “ We expect this partnership to mark a new milestone in ROK-U.S. defense cooperation,” said Kenn Todorov , Vice President Of Command, Control And Weapons Integration at Northrop Grumman. The IBCS maximizes operational efficiency by allowing sharing of data, regardless of the type of weapon system and responding quickly by selecting the optimal interception method.

Hanwha Systems on the other hand, has access to command and control technology that enables real-time linkage between weapon systems and upper-level command and control systems such as the C4I- based Korea Air and Missile Defence System Operation Center (KAMDOC), the Central Air Defence Control Center (MCRC), and the air defence C2A system. Hanwha Systems will now work on developing a next-generation air defense system, in partnership with Northrop Grumman.

Hanwha Systems and South Korea’s Agency for Defense Development also worked together on the development of the operations center for the Korea Air and Missile Defense System (KAMD), which was developed and supplied from 2019 to 2022. The MCRC is the core of South Korea’s air defence network, monitoring the airspace of the Korean Peninsula 24 hours a day,

Hanwha Systems has extensive experience in developing multi-layered air defense solutions,  covering short, medium, and long ranges, The Korean firm is in charge of developing and supplying multi-function radars (MFR) for the Long-Range Missile Defense (LAMD) system, the medium-range surface-to-air guided weapon system M - SAM - II ( Cheon-Gung -II), the long-range surface-to-air guided weapon system L-SAM and the two-stage L-SAM-II (high-altitude interceptor guided missile).
