HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Completes ROKN Submarine Overhaul 27/06/2025 | Mike Rajkumar

The South Korean shipbuilder, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) announced earlier in June, the successful completion ahead of schedule of a submarine depot maintenance activity for the Republic of Korea Navy’s (ROKN) U-214 class diesel submarine YUN BONG-GIL.

The overhaul of the submarine was completed by HD HHI at its Ulsan headquarters 35 days ahead of schedule. “This early delivery of the depot maintenance ship is another example of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ submarine construction and maintenance capabilities, following the timely delivery of the Shin Chae-ho,” HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Specialized Ship Business Division Head Won-ho Joo said.

HD HHI is now also expanding its presence in the global submarine market and accelerating the development of various export models, including a 1,500-ton Peruvian export submarine, as well as submarines in the 2,300-ton and 800-ton class.

Built by HD HHI, the YUN BONG-GIL was delivered to the ROKN in June 2016 and commenced its overhaul on January 30, 2024. The shipbuilder stated that it successfully completed a total of 1,620 maintenance projects (1,260 planned maintenance projects and 360 unplanned additional maintenance projects) as part of the overhaul effort.

The 65.3m long, 6.3m wide, YUN BONG-GIL has a submersible displacement of 1,800 tons and is equipped with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) allowing it to operate underwater for up to two weeks. In addition to the usual heavyweight torpedoes, the submarine also carries domestically produced CHEONRYONG cruise missiles.
