During the night between June 28 and 29, 2025, Russia launched the largest combined aerial attack since the beginning of the war. The assault, which lasted over six hours, involved the deployment of 477 UAVs—mostly GERAN-2 drones (accompanied by GERBERA decoy drones)—and 60 ballistic and cruise missiles, including 4 Kh-47M2 KINZHAL, 7 ISKANDER-M/KN-23, 41 KH-101/ISKANDER-K, 5 KALIBR, and 3 S-300. The attack targeted several Oblasts, including Cherkasy, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Kyiv.
Ukrainian forces reported the interception of a total of 436 drones, one ISKANDER ballistic missile, 33 Kh-101 cruise missiles, and 4 KALIBR missiles. During air defense operations, a Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet crashed after sustaining damage. The pilot failed to eject and died in the crash. The aircraft may have been shot down by a Russian fighter or damaged by debris from a previously intercepted missile or drone—possibly ingested into the engine intake. This marks the third F-16 lost by the Ukrainian Air Force in roughly one year of operations with the American-made jet.
Targets struck during the attack included a refinery in the city of Drohobych (Lviv Oblast, pictured), hit by multiple Kh-101 missiles and GERAN-2 UAVs, as well as another refinery in Kremenchuk, struck by Kh-101, KALIBR, and KINZHAL missiles. Additionally, a dozen GERAN-2 drones targeted both the refinery and the city itself. Several fires were reported near the Mykolaiv airbase following the impact of three missiles. A number of drones also struck the city of Smila (Cherkasy Oblast), where the Smilyansk Technological Faculty College was hit.
The June 28–29 bombing was preceded by another combined aerial strike during the night between June 26 and 27. In that earlier attack, Russia launched 363 GERAN-2 drones, two ballistic missiles, and six cruise missiles. The primary targets were the Starokostyantyniv airbase and the southern area of Dnipro Oblast. According to data released by Kyiv, Ukrainian forces managed to shoot down 211 drones and six cruise missiles.
The month of June has set a new record: Russia launched over 5,000 drones against Ukraine. It’s worth recalling that in both March and May, the number of drones launched had already surpassed 4,000. According to President Zelensky, just in the past week alone, Russia launched 114 missiles, more than 1,270 drones, and nearly 1,100 glide bombs.
These figures confirm that Russia has resumed and intensified full-scale combined attacks, extensively employing UAVs, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles against strategic targets across Ukrainian territory.
