During the night, Russia carried out one of its most extensive combined attacks in recent months against targets in western Ukraine, an assault that continued into the early hours of this morning. Cross-checking the various sources, Moscow’s forces reportedly employed around 300 GERAN-2 one-way attack drones, accompanied by the usual decoy UAVs of various types, mainly GERBERA (150–200), along with roughly 60 missiles, mostly cruise missiles. According to available information, some drones also crossed into the airspace of Romania and Poland; the latter, during the night, closed both Lublin Airport and Rzeszow–Jasionka Airport. Two Romanian Air Force F-16s, together with a pair of German TYPHOONS, conducted an immediate scramble to identify and intercept the UAVs that had entered Romanian airspace.
As for the details of the Russian strike, of the roughly 60 missiles, 24 Kh-101 cruise missiles were launched by 4 Tu-160 strategic bombers from Astrakhan Oblast; another 24 Kh-101 by 6 Tu-95 strategic bombers from Saratov Oblast; 6 KALIBR cruise missiles by the ADMIRAL MAKAROV-class frigate off Cape Myskhako in the Krasnodar region; 4 KALIBR cruise missiles by a VARSHAVYANKA-class (“Improved Kilo”) submarine also off Cape Myskhako; 3 Kh-22 cruise missiles by 3 Tu-22M3M strategic bombers from Kursk Oblast; and one ISKANDER-M ballistic missile launched from west of the city of Kursk.
As usual, the main focus of the attack was Ukrainian energy infrastructure: around 15 Kh-101, combined with GERAN-2 drones, struck the Burshtyn thermal power plant (Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast), while another 9 Kh-101 hit the Ladyzhyn thermal power plant (Vinnytsia Oblast). Around 20 Kh-101 struck a gas storage facility and an electrical substation in Rozdil (Lviv Oblast), as well as an unidentified industrial facility in Ternopil; a residential building in the city was also heavily hit, with the current death toll rising to 19. The 3 Kh-22 missiles reportedly struck a site linked to gas infrastructure near Lubny (Poltava Oblast), also not yet identified.
The GERAN-2 and GERBERA/decoy drones were mainly employed against the eastern Oblasts of the country, such as Kharkiv - hitting areas in Kharkiv city, Zlatopil, Bohodukhiv, and Balakliya - and Sumy.
It is also worth noting that yesterday an ISKANDER-M ballistic missile struck a HIMARS position near the village of Voloska in Kharkiv Oblast, destroying or at least heavily damaging two launchers; the previous day, these same launchers were reportedly used to fire four ATACMS towards Voronezh, in Russia - information not yet officially confirmed, as the missiles could also have been GROM-2. According to available reports, all of them were intercepted by an S-400 air and missile defence system.
