Marines activate 3 new companies at Camp Schwab base in Okinawa 19/12/2025 | Fabio Di Felice

The U.S. Marine Corps has announced the activation of new companies at Camp Schwab, Okinawa, as part of the ongoing implementation of Force Design 2030 and the Stand-in Force concept. The newly formed units fall under Combat Logistics Battalion (CLB) 4 and include Headquarters Company, Alpha Company, and General Service Company. A Bravo Company is expected to be activated in the near future, completing the battalion’s 4-company structure.

The reconfigured CLB-4 is designed to be lighter, more distributed, faster to maneuver, and more resilient than traditional Marine Corps logistics formations. Its purpose is to support III Marine Expeditionary Force operations as a stand-in force operating inside the first island chain. As stated in a U.S. Marine Corps release, “The restructuring of CLB-4 supports the Corps-wide transition toward modular, distributed, and resilient logistics elements prepared for contested maritime operations and peer threats in the first island chain.”

By fielding scalable Combat Logistics Companies within a reinforced battalion and integrating emerging technologies, CLB-4 is intended to provide sustained support to the 4th Marine Regiment in the Indo-Pacific theater, enabling modern naval expeditionary operations in a highly contested environment. As highlighted by Lt. Col. Nathan J. Green, commanding officer of CLB-4, during the activation ceremony, “This is about outpacing our adversaries in a rapidly evolving operating environment.”

The battalion’s mission is to deliver direct-support tactical logistics beyond the organic capabilities of the 4th Marine Regiment. This includes transportation, intermediate-level supply, field-level maintenance, and general engineering functions such as construction, demolition, maintenance, and fabrication.

According to its commander, the current battalion structure should not be considered final. In line with the Marine Corps’ adaptive approach under Force Design 2030, CLB-4 will continue to evolve as lessons are drawn from exercises, joint operations, and ongoing experimentation.
