Yesterday, Hezbollah struck a satellite station in Israel with a missile. The facility is located south of Bet Shemesh, approximately 160 km from the Lebanese border.
More specifically, the target was the Emeq Ha’e’la teleport, which hosts a satellite ground station operated by SES S.A., the European company that is among the world’s leading satellite operators.
Teleports serve as ground gateways linking communication satellites in orbit with terrestrial telecommunications networks, enabling signal transmission through uplink and downlink infrastructure.
The Emeq Ha’e’la station is one of Israel’s main satellite telecommunications facilities. The site hosts more than 80 parabolic antennas, ranging in size from 2.4 m to 32 m in diameter, used for satellite communications services, television broadcasting distribution and data connectivity.
Satellite infrastructures such as the Emeq Ha’e’la teleport are typically considered dual-use assets, capable of supporting both civilian traffic and government communications, and potentially military communications as well.
